Expression of VEGF in Spinal Cord Ischemia and Reperfusion Model of Rat
Kwon Hee-Uk

Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this experimental study was to determine the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and to evaluate the changes of expression of VEGF in spinal cord ischemia/ reperfusion injured rats.
Materials and Methods: Spraque-Dawley rats (250-300 gm) were classified into two groups according to experimental methods. Control group (n=5) underwent sham operation. Experimental group (n=5) underwent clamping the abdominal aorta just below the left renal artery and the abdominal aorta just above the aortic bifurcation for 20 minutes followed by 20 minutes reperfusion. The spinal cord was obtained 7 days after operation. The expression of VEGF was examined using fluoroscent microscope and image analyzer.

Results: Experimental group expressed VEGF more strong conpared to that of the control group (p<0.05). The expression of VEGF was mostly found in the cytoplasm of neurons in grey matter of the spinal cord.

Conclusions: These results suggest that increasing expression of VEGF may have a role in the angiogenic effect and neuroprotection after ischemic injury in spinal cord of rats.
